  • Lighting for Tomorrow Call for Entries

    February 5, 2010

For 2010, the annual energy-efficient Lighting for Tomorrow competition will be considering lighting control devices in addition to its focus on solid-state lighting (SSL) fixtures and replacement lamps.

This year’s competition, organized by the American Lighting Assn. (ALA), the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) and the U.S. Department of Energy, represented by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, officially launched during last month's Dallas Market.

For the first time, LFT will be looking at lighting control products including stand-alone, system-based and whole hose devices. The lighting controls competition is building on the 2009 fluorescent dimming competition by seeking lighting control devices that are compatible with fluorescent or LED technology.

Along with the promotion of residential lighting control devices, the international lighting fixture and lamp design competition continues to encourage innovation in the use of new light sources.

Over time, the competition has evolved, shifting its focus away from decorative energy-efficient fixture families that simply use fluorescent or compact fluorescent lamps over the last two years, as those designs have become mainstream. The 2008 competition requested that all CFL-equipped chandeliers be able to dim and the grand prize winner, Maxlite’s Brigantine, was able to meet this requirement. Continuing this momentum, LFT launched a fluorescent dimming competition in 2009, which sought efficient dimming fixtures and CFLs. The addition of lighting controls in 2010 is another step in that direction.

The deadline for entries is May 21, 2010. Winners will be announced during an award ceremony at the ALA Conference, Sept. 20-22 in Las Vegas. Winners will be eligible for promotion by energy-efficiency programs across the United States and Canada.
